A man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho is attacked by robbers, who beat him and leave him half dead. A priest and then a Levite pass by, but both avoid the injured man. Finally, a Samaritan—considered an outsider by the Jews—stops to help. He treats the man's wounds, takes him to an inn, and pays for his care.
Jesus tells this parable in response to a question: “Who is my neighbor?” The point is that true neighborly love transcends boundaries of race, religion, or social status. The Samaritan, not the religious leaders, is the example of compassion and mercy. Jesus concludes by instructing, "Go and do likewise."
